Prime Minister of Norway Visits NATO Command and U.S. Special Forces
On September 22, 2024, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre visited NATO's Joint Force Command in Norfolk, Virginia, which oversees the defense of northern NATO regions, including Norway. The visit also included a tour of U.S. maritime special forces based at Virginia Beach.
During his visit, Støre emphasized the importance of the U.S. as Norway's closest ally, stating, “The strong and extensive defense cooperation is crucial for Norway’s security. We rely on support from American and allied forces in times of crisis.” He highlighted the significance of a shared understanding of security challenges in the region.
Strengthening NATO's Northern Defense
NATO has recently approved new regional defense plans, with Norway included in the northwest area alongside the UK and Iceland, now under the Norfolk command. The command center is still being developed, with plans for all Nordic countries to be integrated into it once operational. Støre remarked, “We are adapting NATO to the new security environment to enhance our collective deterrence and defense capabilities.”
Collaboration with U.S. Special Forces
At Virginia Beach, the Prime Minister acknowledged the strategic importance of the northern regions for NATO. He noted the enhanced cooperation between Norwegian and American maritime special forces, particularly in Arctic conditions. “Training together during peacetime is crucial for both parties,” he stated. He also mentioned that Norway's Marinejegerkommandoen will soon receive new vessels akin to those used by U.S. special forces, enhancing their operational capabilities at sea.
Støre's visit underscores Norway's commitment to bolstering its defense partnerships and ensuring a robust response to future challenges in the region.
