In 2025, we commemorate the 200th anniversary of Norwegian emigration to the United States, marking a pivotal moment in the shared history between Norway and America. Throughout the year, the Norwegian-American community will host a variety of events and celebrations to honor this significant milestone and the enduring legacy of those who made the journey.

To mark this occasion, the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa, has an exciting lineup of events and exhibits planned throughout the year. From calendars and blog posts to YouTube videos and special exhibitions, Vesterheim will honor this important chapter in both Norwegian and American history. Their new exhibit, "200 Years of Norwegians in America," will be on display until January 31, 2026.

From ‘the Restauration’ Setting Sail to a Century of Norwegian Emigration

The story of Norwegian emigration began in October 1825 when a small sloop named the Restauration sailed into New York Harbor after a grueling 14-week voyage from Stavanger, Norway. The 54-foot vessel was crowded with 52 passengers, many of whom were religious dissenters seeking freedom from persecution. This historic journey marked the beginning of a mass movement, as the Restauration's arrival in New York City heralded the first wave of Norwegian immigration to the United States. Over the next century, more than 800,000 Norwegians would follow these early pioneers, known as the “Sloopers,” in search of better opportunities and new beginnings in America. Norway's emigration rate was second only to Ireland’s in terms of the proportion of its population that left for America.

Vesterheim’s programs for 2025 will focus on commemorating this rich history, with special exhibitions, classes, and events that highlight the contributions of Norwegian immigrants to the United States. Whether you have Norwegian ancestry or a passion for Scandinavian culture, Vesterheim invites you to participate in their upcoming celebrations and explore the unique traditions of Norwegian Americans.

Crossings, Norway & North America, 1825–2025

The 200th-anniversary observance is part of the larger Crossings Bicentennial initiative, titled Crossings, Norway & North America, 1825–2025. This coordinated effort is being managed by several prominent organizations, including the Norwegian American Historical Association (NAHA), Vesterheim, Norway House, and The Norwegian American newspaper. Additional support and representation come from Sons of Norway and the Sons of Norway Foundation, bringing together a dedicated team of professionals to ensure that this milestone anniversary is commemorated in a meaningful way across North America.

As we look back on 200 years of Norwegian emigration, we honor the courage and determination of those who set sail in 1825 and the many thousands who followed. Their legacy continues to shape Norwegian-American culture today, making 2025 a year of reflection and celebration for communities on both sides of the Atlantic.
